START OF THE PROGRAM HERE IN WASHINGTON, THE MARCH FOR OUR LIVES, AS IT’S BEEN BILLED. THIS IS THE FINAL PUSH FOR MEMBER OF THIS CROWD NOW MAKING THEIR WAY SO THEY CAN SEE THE STAGE FROM ANY NUMBER OF DIFFERENT VANTAGE POINTS IN THE CAPITAL CITY. WE’VE BEEN BLESSED WITH VERY GOOD WEATHER FOR THIS MANY PEOPLE VISITING WASHINGTON. [ CHEERS AND APPLAUSE ] I’M HERE TO SPEAK FOR THOSE YOUTH WHO FEAR THEY MAY BE SHOT WHILE GOING TO THE GAS STATION, THE MOVIES, THE BUS STOP, TO CHURCH, OR EVEN TO OR FROM SCHOOL. I’M HERE TO SPEAK FOR ANYONE WHO FEEL THAT CHILDREN GETTING KILLED IN CHICAGO OR ANY OTHER CITY IS NOT AN ACCEPTABLE NORM. MOST IMPORTANTLY, I’M HERE TO SPEAK ON BEHALF OF MY BROTHER TERRELL BOSLEY WHO WAS SHOT AND KILLED WHILE LEAVING CHURCH ON APRIL 4th, 2006. TO GIVE YOU GUYS A FEW STATS FROM CHICAGO, SINCE 2006, THERE HAVE BEEN MORE THAN 5,850 PEOPLE SHOT AND KILLED IN CHICAGO. LET ME REPEAT THAT ONE MORE TIME. SINCE 2006, THERE HAVE BEEN MORE THAN 5,850 PEOPLE SHOT AND KILLED IN CHICAGO. AND SINCE 2012, THERE HAVE BEEN MORE THAN 16,000 PEOPLE SHOT IN CHICAGO. THESE STATS ARE NOT JUST NUMBERS IN A SPEECH. THESE ARE MOTHERS, FATHERS, SONS AND DAUGHTERS. THESE ARE LAWYERS, DOCTORS, ARTISTS, MUSICIANS. MORE THAN ANYTHING ELSE, THESE ARE LIVES CUT SHORT DUE TO SENSELESS GUN VIOLENCE. I MUST ADD CHICAGO’S VIOLENCE EPIDEMIC DIDN’T START OVERNIGHT. IT WAS CAUSED BY PROBLEMS WE’RE STILL NOT DEALING WITH TO THIS DAY. WHEN YOU HAVE A CITY THAT FEELS LIKE IT’S MORE IMPORTANT TO PAY FOR A COLLEGE SPORTS COMPLEX RATHER THAN FUND SCHOOLS AND COMMUNITIES, YOU HAVE GUN VIOLENCE. WHEN YOU HAVE A CITY — WE HAVE A CITY THAT FEELS WE NEED MORE IN DOWNTOWN CHICAGO FOR TOURISTS THAN TO GIVE RESIDENTS JOBS, YOU HAVE GUN VIOLENCE. THE GOVERNOR CALLS IT NONESSENTIAL SPENDING. YOU HAVE GUN VIOLENCE. WHEN YOU HAVE OFFICIALS WHO FEEL IT’S MORE IMPORTANT TO GET A FEW EXTRA DOLLARS FROM THE NRA RATHER THAN HELP THEIR CONSTITUENTS, YOU HAVE GUN VIOLENCE. WHEN YOU HAVE A PRESIDENT THAT BELITTLES CHICAGO’S VIOLENCE, YOU HAVE GUN VIOLENCE. IT IS TIME FOR THE NATION TO REALIZE GUN VIOLENCE IS MORE THAN JUST A CHICAGO PROBLEM OR A PARKLAND PROBLEM. IT’S AN AMERICAN PROBLEM. WE ARE HERE DEMANDING THAT THIS COUNTRY, THAT — WE ARE HERE DEMANDING THAT WE GET WHAT WE AS PEOPLE OF THIS COUNTRY DESERVE. WE DESERVE TO HAVE A RIGHT WITHOUT FEAR OF BEING GUNNED DOWN. WE CAN ONLY LIVE IN THIS AMERICAN DREAM IF WE HAVE THE PROPER GUN LEGISLATION TO DO SO. IN CHICAGO’S CASE, NO MORE FRIVOLOUS SPENDING ON TOURIST ATTRACTIONS BUT RATHER SPEND ON THE PEOPLE WHO ACTUALLY LIVE THERE. IT’S TIME TO CARE ABOUT ALL COMMUNITIES EQUAL. IT’S TIME TO STOP JUDGING SOME COMMUNITIES AS WORTHY AND SOME AS UNWORTHY. IT’S TIME TO STOP JUDGING PEOPLE WHO LOOK LIKE ME OR MY BROTHER DIFFERENT FROM ANYONE ELSE. IT’S TIME FOR AMERICA TO NOTICE THAT EVERYDAY SHOOTINGS ARE EVERYDAY PROBLEMS. I’LL CLOSE WITH THIS QUOTE BY MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. WHEN I SIT — I SIT IN FRONT OF MY CLASS AND THROUGH THOSE DOORS, ANYBODY CAN COME IN. I WANT TO BE FOCUSED ON MY EDUCATION AND NOT THAT I COULD DIE IN A MATTER OF SECONDS DUE TO GUN VIOLENCE. >>REAL QUICK, DO YOU FEEL SOME HOPE AFTER TODAY?>>YES I DO FEEL A LITTLE HOPE. THE GUN LAWS — I HOPE THIS BROUGHT EVERYBODY TOGETHER AND CAN CHANGE GUN LAWS. >>Reporter: THANK YOU SO MUCH. CHRIS, WE JUST HEARD FROM THESE YOUNG PEOPLE WHO ARE HEADED HOME TODAY AFTER THIS POWERFUL DAY. THEY SHOULD BE THINKING ABOUT THEIR EDUCATION, GETTING GOOD GRADES AND NOT GETTING SHOT IN SCHOOL. THAT WAS THE CHANGE AND THE MESSAGE FROM THIS MARCH TODAY HERE IN WASHINGTON. CHRIS?>>MARIANA ATENSIO, THANK YOU VERY MUCH. I’M JOINED BY FORMER TALK SHOW HOST AND NAVAL INTELLIGENCE OFFICER MONTEL WILLIAMS, MSNBC POLITICAL ANALYST JOSH EARNEST AND FORMER RNC CHAIR AND MSNBC POLITICAL ANALYST MICHAEL STEELE. MICHAEL, I WANT TO START WITH YOU. YOU AND I HAVE BEEN CLOSE TO POLITICS A LONG TIME. I HAVE FOUR BROTHERS. ONE OF THEM IS A GUN GUY, SECOND AMENDMENT GUY. NOT FOR HUNTING OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT, NOT FOR KILLING ANIMALS. DOESN’T DO THAT. HE JUST BELIEVES IN THE RIGHT TO HAVE GUNS, TO PROTECT YOURSELF IF THE GOVERNMENT COMES TO TRY TO TAKE THEM AWAY. PURE SECOND AMENDMENT GUY. >>RIGHT. >>THOSE GUYS AREN’T GOING TO CHANGE THEIR MIND BECAUSE OF A PROTEST. >>NO, THEY’RE NOT. >>WHO WILL CHANGE THEIR MIND?>>IT’S NOT ABOUT CHANGING THEIR MINDS ON AN INDIVIDUAL BASIS. IT’S ABOUT WHAT SHOULD BE THE NATION’S POLICY IN DEALING WITH WHAT IS A REAL PROBLEM RIGHT NOW, HAVING KIDS BEING KILLED IN THEIR CLASSROOMS, HAVING COMMUNITIES TORN ASUNDER BECAUSE OF THE VIOLENCE WE SEE IN CITIES LIKE CHICAGO. I WOULD SUSPECT YOUR BROTHER IS NOT GOING TO BEGRUDGE A MOTHER WHO HAS JUST LOST A CHILD TO GUN VIOLENCE FROM WANTING TO SEE SOMETHING DONE TO PROTECT NOT JUST THE REST OF HER CHILDREN, BUT EVERYONE ELSE’S CHILD IN THAT COMMUNITY IF THAT’S WHAT IT TAKES. WHAT IT TAKES, THAT’S THE QUESTION. THAT’S WHERE THE DEBATE NEEDS TO BE. YOU CANNOT HAVE A ONE-SIDED DEBATE. YOU CANNOT HAVE A DEBATE, A SHUTDOWN WE’VE SEEN RECENTLY BY THE WHITE HOUSE WHERE THEY START DOWN ONE ROAD AND THEN BACK AWAY FROM IT. IF YOU’RE GOING TO ENGAGE ON THE SUBJECT, THE AMERICAN PEOPLE WANT YOU TO ENGAGE BECAUSE THEY WANT SOLUTIONS. >>I CAN HEAR THE FATHERS OF PENNSYLVANIA, THE CENTER OF PENNSYLVANIA, THE T. NOBODY GOING TO TELL ME WHEN MY SON GETS A RIFLE. I’LL DECIDE WHEN HE GETS A RIFLE. CULTURAL FATHER/SON THING IS WORKING AGAINST PEOPLE LIKE TOOMECHLT Y, MANSION AND THESE GUYS ARE WILLING TO GO FURTHER THAN THEY ARE RIGHT NOW. >>77% OF PEOPLE LIKE YOUR BROTHER AND ME, I HAVE AN AR-15, SB 89. I SPENT 22 YEARS IN THE MILITARY. EVERY YEAR YOU TESTED ME TO MAKE SURE I CAN SHOOT THEM. I LIKE TO SHOOT GUNS. I DON’T SHOOT ANIMALS. I SHOOT ROCKS, I SHOOT CANS. NONE OF MY CHILDREN SHOOT. I’M GOING TO TELL YOU SOMETHING. WHAT YOU SAW TODAY IS GOING TO CHANGE. 77% OF GUN OWNERS, I’M AN NRA MEMBER. 77% OF US BELIEVE WE NEED BACKGROUND CHECKS. 64% OF US HAVE CHANGED THEIR MINDS AND SAID WE NEED TO TAKE PEOPLE ON NO-FLY LISTS AND TAKE GUNS FROM THEM. >>IS NRA A DEMOCRACY?>>HECK NO. BUT WHAT IS IS THIS. THOSE PEOPLE, THOSE PEOPLE RIGHT THERE. IN 1973, I WAS A STUDENT ELECTED TO THE BOARD OF EDUCATION IN THE STATE OF MARYLAND. I WAS MY CLASS PRESIDENT. I WAS ONE OF THESE KIDS. LOOK WHAT THEY CREATED. THIS IS NOW SEEN ALL OVER THE WORLD, SPEAKING IN ISRAEL, MEXICO. THIS GROUP IS GOING TO CHANGE AMERICA. DON’T THINK ABOUT IT MIGHT HAPPEN. IT’S HAPPENING. >>JOSH, WHAT PRESIDENT OBAMA OFTEN ENGAGED WAS AN ACCUSATION THAT SOMEHOW HE WAS POLITICIZING THIS TRAGEDY. HE WAS SAYING WE DO NEED TO POLITICIZE THIS TRAGEDY. PEOPLE NEED COMMON SENSE SOLUTIONS, NOT RAMPING UP GUNS AND TAKING THEM AWAY, BUT MAKING SURE WE’VE GOT BACKGROUND CHECKS, THAT WEAPONS OF WAR AREN’T EASILY OBTAINED BY PEOPLE ON A NO-FLY LIST. THEY ARE COMMON SENSE PROPOSALS. WE NEED A SUSTAINED POLITICAL MOVEMENT TO MAKE CHANGE. THAT’S WHAT WE’RE SEEING ON THE STREETS TODAY. >>LET ME TELL YOU WHAT YOU’RE UP AGAINST. BRILLIANT SILENCE. THE PRESIDENT IS IN MAR-A-LAGO. HE WENT THERE ON PURPOSE, SEEING THIS CROWD STAY HERE. >>THAT’S RIGHT. >>HE COULD HAVE STAYED HERE. HE WENT OUT OF TOWN. CONGRESS IS ON A TWO-WEEK — I DIDN’T KNOW EASTER WAS ANY TIME SOON HAPPENING. BUT THEY’RE HIDING OUT OF TOWN. THEY’RE GOING TO OUT WAIT THIS CROWD. AND HOW DOES PAUL RYAN, THE SPEAKER, GET PUSHED INTO BRINGING UP A GUN BILL?>>GET VOTED OUT. >>WE’LL ONLY SEE CHANGE IN CONGRESS WHEN WE SEE DIFFERENT PEOPLE IN CONGRESS. >>THANK YOU. >>OPTIMISM OVERWHELMS ME. >>I BELIEVE IN KIDS. >>I BELIEVE IN IT, TOO. I WANT IT TO HAPPEN. MONTEL, THANK YOU. SO MUCH MORE TO COME FROM MSNBC. SO MUCH MORE FROM WASHINGTON, D.C. THE POWERFUL PARTY OF ACTION IS NOT OVER. I’M JOINED BY FORMER CONGRESSWOMAN DONNA EDWARDS AND RYAN COSTELLO, TO TALK ABOUT WHETHER ADULTS IN CONGRESS CAN FOLLOW THE EXAMPLE OF HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF YOUNG PEOPLE HERE TODAY. WE’RE BACK LIVE IN WASHINGTON FOR MARCH FOR OUR LIVES AFTER THIS.
